I put a check mark in the box at the beginning of the message.
Then open the menu in the "more options" box above the message list and select which folder you wish the message to appear in.
Then click "go".
The message you selected will then appear in the folder you picked and also still be in your inbox. You can then delete the one in your inbox if you wish.
This is what works for the version of Gmail that I have. :) . Don't know what that is however but just what I have always had.
