Good 12v dc TV

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good 12v DC TV. I bought a new MH and it has 2 Jensen 12v in it and they are about the sorriest excuse for a HDTV that I have every seen. If you are not sitting directly in front of the TV you can hardly see anything but just some black and a little color. If you stand up you can't see it either, like I say you have to be straight in front of it. I had a Jensen in my past RV and we could view it from almost any angle. The TV in the bedroom is just ok if on one side of the bed but just on the other side you can't even see it.

I tried looking at it receiving over the air at first and thought it was just bad so put a DVD in the player and it was just as bad.

The front one is a 24" and the rear one is 22"

Thanks.

  • Thanks for all of the ideas.

I know in the past I had a Sharp TV and the output of the brick was 12VDC but I was never brave enough to cut the cord and wire it to the 12V directly. Also at that time everybody was saying not to do it.

I guess it is off to Best Buy to buy 2 new TVs. Just what I wanted to do after buying a new MH that listed for over $120,000, is go out and buy new TVs for it. The front one was standard but the rear one was over $400 option. How do they charge so much for a 22” HDTV. Why don’t they just leave them out and let us buy our own. Put the wiring in for them and let us install ones to our liking. It seems that they all have a love affair with Jensen garbage (in my opinion). Just like the stereo units they put in them, again they are Jensen’s, supposedly they are built to stand the up to driving down the road. I don’t believe this as I have used Sharp TVs for years and they worked just fine and I took them out and used them in the house. In fact my wife is still using a Sharp in her sewing room and this TV was bought over 13 years ago and traveled many mile in the back of a 5th wheel and never had one trouble and it has a great viewing width. Why do the manufactures put such garbage in the units? I guess I’ll answer that myself, because we buy it with this garbage.

I have to take the MH into a dealer to get the power skylight fixed. It sounds like the gears are stripped. It worked on the walk through on Wednesday morning and didn’t on Thursday evening. Gives me great confidence that it is going to work for years. I think once it is fixed I’ll just leave it closed and never use it. When I’m in the dealer with this problem I’m going to complain about the TVs. I know it won’t do any good but it will let me vent a little.

Ok enough of the complaining, thanks for the ideas.

If you have a good 120VAC HDTV brand you like you can always install a PSW 300WATT Inverter to run off your battery and give you 120VAC to run the HDTV and other home entertainment items like the DVDs-cell phone chargers-computer chargers etc... I ran two 120VAC emergency drop cords installed out of site to both my home entertainment area and the bedroom area from my Installed power Inverter for our emergency 120VAC power requirements. All you see is one of those multi-tap extension cord receptacles on the back of a cabinet top with ON-OFF breaker switch.. These are always ON when we are camping. Even at Electric camp sites... They go off-line sometimes too...

Some folks will find a good HDTV they like that has the 120VAC BRICK transformer for power source. Those usually put around 15-19VDC and run just fine off of 12-15VDC that your trailer converter/charger produces... All you need is a DC adapter (RADIO SHACK) that fits the DC Cord connector on the back of those HDTVs... Carry the brick transformer with you to Radio Shack and you can match up the proper adapter real quick.

The VIZIO HDTVs pick up the digital BROADCAST TV signals from the local towns just great using the OTA BATWING crank up antenna. With digital high def TVs you either get great quality TV pictures or nothing at all... Not like the old days...

We have been running the VIZIO HDTV models from WALMART for years. They always have something good on sale it seems... We use the 22-inch model in our off-road POPUP. Having the same HDTVs everywhere makes it easy to always find a remote unit hehe...

  • My 19" Vizio draws just under 3 Amps on 12 Volts.

i use the wall-wart when I have mains power

When dry camping, I use a 12Volts power cord from Radio Shack.
  • Go to Best Buy and look at the TV's there. Ask salesman if the one you like the best or fits your budget has an external transformer. You will find lots of brands that are using 12 volts as a power source with a step down inline transformer You then just buy the appropriate cord for less than $10.00.
VOila a 12 volt tv. I have 2 in my MH that I did just this.
One came from Walmart and is a Sceptre the other is a Best Buy Insigna brand.
Make sure you look at the TV from different angles in the store.
  • I bought one a couple of yrs ago but can't tell you the brand, memory lapse. I went to an appliance store that had a sale on 2 19" models, choice $99. I looked them over. I asked the salesman if either ran on 12v, he had no idea. I looked to see if they had wall warts. One did then I checked the output voltage, 12v and bought it. It's still working but in truth it's in the bedroom and doesn't get used much.
