Google is Hogging my Data Allotment

I got a new Verizon hotspot and was trying it out last night, so I was watching internet data closely. We used 3 GB of data out of our 5 GB monthly allowance, during a period of 6 hours. We used the browser perhaps a total of two hours, that's all; no movies, videos, photo downloading, etc.

The Verizon tech found that virtually all the useage was to 3 Google IP's, 2607:f8b0:4000:19:: c, 2607:f8b0:4012:802::100b, 2607:f8b0:4012:802::100a. He gave me a number to call Google IP Administrator, but of course you might as well try to reach the president---no luck, just the recorded idiot messages.

Can anyone tell me what Google is doing to me? We are old folks, no facebook, no twitter, no movies, no videos; just a little surfing and a couple of emails per day.

At least your dataplan is 5GB. I am grand fathered in 3GB dataplan from a few years back and watched a movie one time playing with it and it eat up all my 3GB for that one movie haha...

I don't have any problems with just using it for checking/sending emails, checking in with the kids, paying bills and some web surfacing. I do watch my usage like a hawk however...

I am using the Verizon 3GB 2200 MIFI plan since 2009...

I also have the WILSON SLEEK Cradle in both the truck and in my OFF-ROAD POPUP. Really helps extending my local WIFI HOTSPOT coverage area around the camp sites with the outside passive antenna...

  • What type of devices are you using?

    Could be downloading updates.

Are you really sure those are google sites? Could be a virus doing something.

What google applications do you have downloaded? Many applications use data in the background.
  • One thing that helped my data usage was to disable auto play videos. Find the instructions for your browser online. After you disable it, you will have to click on the video box to see any videos. Videos on news sites, weather, facebook, etc auto play depending on your browser settings.
What device and browser are you using?
  • Not familiar with Verison hotspot but there should easily be a way to block unwanted usage from the hotspot itself.

It should show who/what is online and should be able to simply block it.
If not, would take it back or call the company that sold it to you.

I have one I bought from radio shack, a net gear and it is very easy to use even if you aren't computer savy. Good luck.
