Sure, just don't get out of range of those cell towers...and make sure your data plan can absorb the data you'll be using...and make do with the 2nd-rate software off those apps...etc., etc.
GPS units still have their advantages in these areas. We just upgraded to the Garmin Nuvi 3597LMT HD, their flagship. Its magnetic mount is worth the extra money, just pull and stow. I'm getting 10X the traffic updates and have saved commute time three times in the last two weeks as a result. No hanging wire, and it's as small and thin as a smartphone. We have smartphones and there's a mile of difference between them and a good GPS. Now this is only a personal opinion, based on my own hands-on experience. Can't speak for others. :)

can"t tell which one to buy, I'll share my experience.
I use a Garmin,(10 years ) I bought a Tom Tom . people said it's east to transfer google route maps to it :( i can't do it.
Hate it because the trye software is totally different then Garmin.
I can't get it to plan routes or way points. I'm ok on computers, but I hate the tom tom , wasted 350 dollars on it.
my point is if you like the way Garmin is in routes and maps and going from computer planing to the gps . Stick with the same brand name you have. I hate my Tom Tom , it was a big cash hit to me to waste 350 dollars on it.

For those using the co-pilot app with your ipad, what type of mount did you purchase for the ipad?

I've owned two Tom Toms and they are great, though there is no setting for RVs. Lifetime maps and traffic conditions never had a problem. It seems the one's for RVs are more expensive and the reviews I've read haven't been that good, so I'll save my money.

x3 for CoPilot. Especially if you link it with the Garmin Glo bluetooth GPS receiver. Linking this to my iPad makes for a LARGE display, and with downloadable maps no cell signal is necessary. $99 for the GPS antenna, $10 for CoPilot, and you're out the door with a great system!

My Garmin LM50 takes me on adventures I would have never thought of myself.

Tried the Garmin Dezl in RV mode yesterday in Best Buy. Had it route me to a place that I knew so that it would chose between a road with low clearances or the route that is safe to go on in the RV. I have and have been using the Garmin 760RV and didn't realize Best Buy sold the 760DEZL which is different than the RV model in some of it's software. Also, to properly set up the unit for the RV option is fairly detailed with specifying all the parameters of the RV profile along with making sure you have all the correct "avoidances" selected for it to operate correctly so I have a feeling you might have overlooked something and that's why it didn't work correctly. Can you please provide SPECIFICALLY your start and end points and what low clearance specifically it missed so I can confirm the issue with my Garmin 760RV.

I've found my 760RV to be fairly accurate with the only thing I don't like is that it uses the "truck routes" around metro areas which is not always needed in the RV mode, but that's just the way the unit works.
