gps routes

Does anyone know of a gps unit that allows you to lay out a route using highway numbers rather than cities?

  • I don't know of any programs that will allow you to specify exact route numbers to travel. There may be some out there, but I've not used any.
  • Most mapping programs will allow you to click on and drag specific points of the proposed route to your desired route.

You still need to use something to specify what stretch of highway you need. For example, Highway 70 runs the full length of the U.S., and runs concurrent with Highway 64 for a good distance. If you said you wanted to take 70 to 64, there would be a LOT of possible choices for it to pick from.

I agree with the poster who uses waypoints. I find the intersection I need on the map, drop a waypoint, and have the exact position I am looking for. One time I was even able to pick the westbound lane vs the eastbound lane on the interstate.
  • No, I mean if I want to go from tulsa to san Francisco I can enter the highway numbers I want to travel. There are some highway intersections not located in cities.
  • You may need to expand on this a bit. Are you talking about entering two cities and letting the GPS determine the route between them?

When I set up a route I use "waypoints" which are independent of cities or highway numbers.
