Harbor Freight Infrared Laser Thermometer

Has anyone used this Harbor Freight Infrared Laser Targeting Thermometer? If so, how accurate was it and has it lasted? If you have one, has it been helpful in spotting bearing and tire overheating? I noticed that Harbor Freight has them on sale for $35.99.
  • I've had mine for several years....and just used it again the other day.
I just had a new T-stat installed with a new A/C unit at home....I used the gun to check the wall temp next to the T-stat, and it was spot-on as far as temps were concerned.
I don't know just how well it is calibrated, but this one was within 1-degree (actually exactly)...so it could be that others are of a degree or two?

Worth the money...YES!!! Great for testing the brakes, tires, bearings, etc for RVers.
Especially since you are really looking for differences...not an exact temp.
Ex.: One set of brakes is 100-degrees hotter than the rest.....that would indicate a possible problem.
  • Another satisfied user here for 5 yrs. Have not checked the accuracy against anything of known value. But I am more interested in one tire/wheel/bearing being much hotter than the others showing a possible problem with that one than I am in absolute temps.
  • I bought one at Costco for $34.99 and it included a moisture meter.

The moisture meter came in handy after a pipe froze and broke in my house in February.

The laser thermometer works well and has given me no problems.

I was going to buy one at HF, but I ran across the Costco deal and felt it was a better choice.

I'm sure most of the laser thermometers are made in the same factory in China and are of similar quality.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one from HF.
If I was using one professionally, I would look into Fluke or another name brand.

But, for comparing tire/brake, etc. temps. The Harbor Freight unit will do the job at a reasonable price. JMO

Have used one at low temps. Seems to be not all that accurate,, At higher temps does very well. At Grill temps goes to "OVER LIMIT"

Repeats fairly well (This is more important cause if it always reads say 200 degrees as 220,, Well you then learn to discount 10%)
  • Glad to hear everyone else's worked great , mine worked OK till it fell about 3 feet and landed in dirt , and after that wouldn't read temps right, it makes a great cat laser toy now lol
  • It seems this tool "made in China" works fine.

I have used one for years for looking at wheel bearing heat... Close enough for me... Back in my working days they were most useful around high power AC connections for heat spots... Would spot a loose connection real quick...

Since you brought it up I am just realizing I don't know where mine is now...

Same thing has happened to my Sears clamp on DC AMMETER... It isn't in its normal storage place either...

I do have son-in-laws around alot haha...

Isn't that the truth, son in my case.
  • I have been using mine at work for several years. It's accurate enough. However, the battery life is very poor compared to others I've used such as Raytek and Fluke. Good for the price though.
