Both tuners
can be used at the same time if the customer chooses to watch one program while recording another. That's the way many people choose to use a DVR and that's the way all DirecTV DVRs have been designed. That's what Dish calls using the DVR in "single mode". If you didn't know this I hope that I have explained it simply enough for you to understand.
If the two tuners are used to support separate TVs then using one of them to record a program means that one of the TVs will not have the ability to watch a different program during the duration of the recording. This is what is called dual mode and, personally, I found it useless because of this and because one of the TVs was stuck having only SD programming.
