An upscaler can take a R/W/Y signal and digitize it to put in on an HDMI cable but it is physically impossible to take an SD signal and turn it into an HD one. The write-up for this device is misleading at best and approaches fraudulent since it says that it can turn a 480i signal (SD) into a 720p one. That's simply not possible.

SD to HD upconversion has been around for years.
But is an up converted 480i video the same
quality as native 720p, 1080i, or 1080p -- Nope.
Regardless, native HDMI isn't coming out of a VIP222s R/W/Y connectors.
