I have dish net. vip622 receiver and on tuner 2 you only receive sd however i find if i have the receiver set to single mode(which i usually do)i the receive HD on all tv's. when talking to a friend who has direct tv he said he has HD on both modes,just wondering if this is true.

Direct TV uses different receivers with different capabilities. Replacing your 622 with a Hopper and Joey on Dish would also give you HD on both TV's, plus independent access to the Hopper's three tuners and DVR recordings.

To answer the OP's question more directly, DirecTV's receivers are either HD or SD and do not "change" the way you've noticed that the 622's does. The HR44 Genie has 5 independent tuners all of which are capable of displaying HD.

Changing the 622 to single tuner negates the dual tuners so you have only one tuner available for use. If you want HD you MUST use the HDMI (or component) connection. If you are sending a signal to a 2nd TV via coax it will be in SD no matter how you have the receiver setup. Dish is the only one that makes a dual tuner box. With DirecTV you must have 2 separate receivers on 2 separate TV's to watch 2 separate channels. That makes the HDMI HD connection simple.

I suggest that the following is a bit clearer:--The 622 can be EITHER connected to two TVs (dual mode) or to one TV (single mode)--If you use dual mode one of the TVs will be able to get HD via HDMI; the other TV will get SD by coax or RCA video feed. If you wish to watch one channel and record another, one of the TVs will lose its ability to select a different channel during the recording.--If you use single mode the receiver will act exactly like the DirecTV receivers do; both tuners will be available to one TV in HD. You will be able to record one and watch another.My experience was that many Dish installers are uniformed with respect to single mode installation since Dish stresses the use of a single receiver box to serve two TVs. In fact my installer actually connected my TV in a "gerry rigged" single mode in which he had it set up for dual mode but had both and HD an SD feed going to just one TV. It took me a few minutes of going through the user guide to realize this was stupid. Just push a button and go into single mode.DirecTV DVRs always act as if they are Dish DVRs operating in single mode.
