Head Up Display - Best HUD app

I recently acquired a HUD device to be used with an android smart phone. I downloaded a few android apps which work fine. I am curious to see which app HUD users prefer. Which app offers the best interface? Is there a HUD app out there deemed to be the cadillac of all HUD apps? I wouldn't mind paying extra to get it!
Thanking you in advance.

  • I agree with those of you who use technology to your advantage. Displays are fine, but as you said, audible alarms and on the road guidance are worth a ton to me. After all it is much better than pulling a paper road map while driving.

So, should we also take HUD's out of our fighter jets and airliners? Don't want any distracted pilots out there.

I'm all for the HUD. Corvettes and other cars have had HUD images reflected onto their windshields. I'm all for it. It would, as designed, keep my eyes on what's going on outside my car and still feed me the info I need. Seems that those that don't like HUD don't know HUD.

Anything that reflects from the INSIDE of the windshield makes it HARDER to see through that reflection.

Think of it this way, next time you have a clear sunny sky with the sun IN FRONT of the vehicle, take a good look at the bottom of your windshield.

You WILL see a very bright reflection of your dash..

You WILL have a difficult time looking through the glass past the reflection.

HUD uses the inside surface of the windshield as a mirror, doing so makes seeing through that illuminated surface many times more difficult.

Daytime might not be as bad for seeing through the glass, but night time you will end up messing with your eyesight, essentially blinding yourself..
  • Well! I did not want to start a debate on the pros and cons of the HUD device. We all have our opinions on gps, cell phones etc. My HUD sits just above the steering wheel, well below my line of sight of the road. The see through glass provides turn by turn directions when needed. Your eyes do not leave the road.
Some of you do not like technology and that's fine with me.
I am still looking for the best app for the HUD.
  • an automotive HUD install from the factory
should keep the display where you can see it on the windshield at an appropriate light level, but not in line of sight with the highway and driving, not looking through the display to see the road

does an after market HUD do this ?

i would be much more interested, in oil pressure and engine temp etc..
    than speed

I use technology to my advantage. I have a couple HUD devices (TPMS and CoPilot), however they are not (and don't need to be) in my line of vision. I use them for audio alerts only and have them sitting in the center console out of the way. Anything happens I get a warning beep. The only one that beeps is the TPMS, so I know what the alert is.

They are very valuable if used wisely, and don't let any grumpy old farts give you grief over their value.

Great, yet ANOTHER "distracted driver" that folks will need to be alert for and dodge..

If Heads up display was such a great thing it would be integrated into EVERY vehicle.

    It isn't.

I prefer to be able to fully see out my window glass without the potential distractions, so my phone is in a pocket and stays there for the duration of the drive.

You WILL someday understand where I am coming from after you find yourself facing a running deer darting across the road with oncoming traffic headlights blinding you at the same time.

I can easily spot folks who are driving distracted, they are often the ones randomly crossing the line nearly off the road or worse coming at me..

I see folks driving with extremely bright GPS and Sat radio systems mounted to the dash or window, I can't help to think that they are blinding themselves to other potential dangers like deer or other drivers..

Folks, put those extra distractions down and away and pay attention to the road around you..

    End of "Public Service Announcement".

yup. during my public safety career we looked at HUDs for our police vehicles a couple of times and while the technology has certainly changed since then it was never adopted because it was of a distraction than anything else.
  • I also drive with nothing on my dash. No GPS no phone and I can see the road just fine.
  • I would say the reason it's not a standard is 1 - Cost, 2 - Warranty Issues, 3 - the general public is too dumb to use it.

I thought I saw advertising a year or so ago that someone like Cadillac was installing it?

The main point for it that I see is having your speed up someplace higher where it's easy to see it vs having to look down at the speedometer taking your eyes away from the windshield.
