Help pointing directv dish

Gang

I'm at home trying to help a buddy who is out camping and trying for his first time to set up his directv satellite system - i think hes a bit overwhelmed right now. Problem is I'm a dish user and don't really know where to tell him to point at. Are directv satellites numbered like dish ones are?

Here's what I know about his equipment (via a text he sent):

DirectTV + HDDVR box. This inline SWM ODU only box (direct TV guy said this box won't run without it.) and an direct tv winegard dish.

The dish has a single lnb and he says its roughly 18x20.

Does directv use multiple birds for programming like dish does?

Thanks for providing any guidance so I can help him out a bit better

  • What is the part number of his receiver box?
There are three tools that making dish pointing very easy.
First is a smart phone app, dishpointer pro.
Second is an Aligh-A-Site. This is used to find the correct location and ensure there is no trees in the way.
Last is a Birdog Satellite meter. This will fine tune the dish to the correct satellite with extreme accuracy.
Use any or all of them makes dish pointing a very easy job.
If his receiver is a SWM only then he cannot use any but a SWM antenna.
  • Your friends 18X20 oval dish, even thought it looks like it has one LMB, can see 3 satellites at the same time. The LNB actually is 3 LNBs in one housing. You can see this from the front of the LNB. His dish will see sat 99, 101 and 103.

  • With a single LNB, you won't be able to receive HD TV. You can only use the single satellite. But zeroing in on a single satellite actually simplifies the entire process. HD requires a multiple LNB dish.
