Help with King Dome receiver

Hi all,
I have a King Dome auto search satellite receiver that came with a motorhome that I just bought. It's a model # 9702. I have followed the instructions for finding satellites but it doesn't seem to be finding the right ones and when it does find any it's only one. According the operating manual it will work with either Direct or Dish and I have dish. Perhaps it won't work with the receiver I have which is a vip211k which I was using with no problem with my tailgater. I have allot of experience setting up a Dish 500 dish and the tailgater but can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong with the King Dome. I have a wide open view in all directions so interference is not a issue. Thanks

Two comments.> First the important one
Dish recently did some remote re-programming of their satellites.. Domes of your vintage can no longer lock on to them due to the way they identify themselves.

Sorry, In some cases a software upgrade will fix but in most I think replacement with a modern factory updated dome is the only choice.. Contact King Controls to find if your most likely no longer supported (A favorite line with many companies) product can be updated (Sorry to sound bitter but I have heard that "no longer supported" line from so many companies it's amazing,, NOT however King Controls, since I do not own anything by them... yet).

Direc TV it may still work for a few years, then it will fail there too. (Same issue)

Now the "nit".. It's an antenna, not a receiver.

Yes give King a call they offered me a VQ4500 at a discount $304.00 plus shipping

Bad news is that as of Friday they are on back order..

Spend the extra $100 and get a Winegard Pathway X2. It has a larger dish than the King (less rain fade) and works with either the eastern or western arc sats.

The problem may be that DISH just changed its transmission technology, and many older #9702 units can no longer recognize the satellites. Newer #9702 units CAN work after receiving a software upgrade at a King dealer's location. You can't do it yourself without a $500 unit, which isn't worth buying for just one dish.

My suggestion is to go to King Controls and confirm whether your serial number falls within the upgradeable range -- or that you have to buy a new antenna.
  • I would contact King controls cust. support. It seems that Dish and also direct tv has changed their signaling. My king dome stopped working and they offered a replacement at a discounted price. Depending on your model there may be just a software update. They were very helpful.

  • When we had our KD. It had to be set for DirecTv. So I am guessing it has to be set for Dish. Pin codes in the dome.
