Hotspot Overage

We have Verizon hotspot ... and our data allowance continued to go over each month starting about a year or so ago. So, I went to AD-Block on Firefox ... saw no ads, and it went back to somewhat normal use.

Then, my banking updated security and Firefox would not allow my banking page to function properly. So, I went to Chrome - and now I see a ton of ads, and in only two weeks, I'm already over the data limit.

SO, my tech-dumb guess is, the ads eat a lot of data, and show up every page, and continuously burden the data allowance. Is this a correct guess?

IF so, is there a way to load Chrome that stops the ads - I'm now getting a million ads, including here on RV.net and other pages. With Ad Block, I never got the ads unless I asked for something.

I like Chrome well enough, and in fact any of the browsers work for what we need. But I don't want to eat so much data. I can use Firefox for general browsing, as before, and only switch to Chrome for banking if that stops the data use, or do I need to delete Chrome so it never pulls data? If in fact, that's what's happening.

I do what STROLLIN says - My setup here is using two monitors so one monitor is running from FIREFOX browser and the other monitor is running from CHROME browser..

Just upgraded to WIN 10 on the the 29th and see they have new browser called EDGE. Seems like when EDGE sees something it doesn't like the whole screen goes green here but sound still goes??? Sure looks like a PLAIN JANE program but says it is faster than IE... Haven't tried it yet for all of my online RADIO SCANNERS using BROADCASTIFY and a few of my TV downstreams when I miss a TV show I really want to see. Bank Account logins will probably not like it either.

My Bank account and other necessary login seem to work good for me on FIREFOX. I have to use CHROME here for FACEBOOK otherwise I miss out of the trending section for my friends.

When on the road I am using VERIZON MIFI account with my CELLPHONE service which only has a 3GB dataplan. I really have to watch it close to not get over my limit in a month... MS AUTO UPDATEs got me one month...

  • Yes, they use a lot of data and make browsing a much slower experience.

Yes, that's what I had in mind - altho, as I use Chrome, I notice it's much faster ... and seems easy to use as well. Altho, I like FF as well.

I suspect I'll try to load Ad-block for Chrome too, and see how that plays out. Then I have both blocked.

Guess these advertisers haven't figured out yet WE CAN FIND what we want easy enough. And the ads just use data and upset us. SO, in a way, we're 'paying' to see the sales pitch we don't even want.

Am I correct in thinking that ads use a lot of extra data, especially the moving and dancing ones?
  • Simple solution is to use FireFox for all your other browsing, then use Chrome only to access your bank.
  • There are different versions of adblock.
The version installed is determined by the browser you are using when you access https://adblockplus.org/.

Open https://adblockplus.org/ in your chrome browser and it should have a button that says "Install for Chrome".
