Thanks for all the replies, but it looks like I'm stuck with Windows 7.
BelArc gave me the product key, but it wouldn't work. On-line chat w/Windows help desk confirmed that it is a valid OEM version product key but the update was blocked by the retailer.
Oh well, I'm not really unhappy with Win 7, so I guess it's not that big a deal.
Keep Windows 7. You are not gaining anything really over that with Win 10. I have Win 7 on my desktop and I will not upgrade it to Win 10. I upgraded a new laptop from 8.1 to 10 only because I did not like 8.1.
If you really want the Win 10 update and you know your PC processor, etc. will handle it -> If you tried the install from the Win 10 website and it asked for your product key then it did not recognize the one that is installed on your computer. Right click on the "Computer" icon on your Win 7 desktop. Look down at the bottom of the screen that opens and it will list the product key that is installed on your PC. If that one is the same as the one you have, then there is something wrong and I would call MS back again - by phone and not chat. If it is not the same number then use this one to input to the Win 10 install.
