We replaced our dell computer laptop with a new dell laptop. We would like to use the old computer up stairs. We have a verizon wifi router.When we boot it up it just shows all the technical information. Do we need a rescue disk or ?? to get it up and running again?

It's a broad question with many variables, whether software corruption or a hardware issue. Also depends on how old it is; does it have sufficient ram etc. Is the battery still taking a charge? I use to tear all mine apart and fix them, but the last time it went down I took it to a local mom and pop computer store, and they fixed it beautifully with a new SSD and a reinstall of the OS all for $200 bucks and I've been very pleased. You probably need to make the decision if the specs are good enough to keep it going. There are guys on here a lot better than me who might give you some ideas.

Generally speaking a old computer is nearly worthless. It needs more RAM, larger hard disk, and new OS. The cost of those things usually exceed the value of the old laptop.

First what do you want it for.> JUST web browsing. Viewing the odd video that kind of thing. Consider a LINUX distro. alas i can't tell you which one. Many of 'em run well on older hardware.

How old is your computer? If it was working previously, yet only seeing startup display (?) and not the OS loading or desktop, then your hard drive is likely corrupted or damaged. I'd replace it with a 256G SSD, as these can be had nowadays for $60.-$70. Reload the OS with your restore discs.

A lot depends on why you replaced, what OS it is running, and what you plan on doing with it. Probably will need a little more information than "it just shows all the technical information." Did it run before it was replaced? If it is an installation of Windows 7 then it would be fine to use, if an older install of XP, they it would probably be worth it. Older than those I wouldn't mess with it. But that's me.
