I do have a 4T external hard drive, but that is, for all intents and purposes, is just a larger thumb drive in terms of transfer method. I am not some IT wizard in terms of technology and if it going to be big production or if there is a chance of screwing up the new one I will eventually take the time to archive to the external drive and then piece-meal the restoration to the new one as needed.
Unless you have more data than the external drive will hold, I think this is the best idea. When complete, the external drive will be a backup.
I agree.
So far as backup--a lot of people ignore this, and then regret it.
You should back up the new computer also. Computers either die quickly or last a long time, in my experience.
I don't use cloud services for backup--too slow on the upload. I do use Microsoft OneDrive for sharing files with people, mainly images, since it's already part of my Office365 suite.
My advice is to cull the info on the old computer.... no doubt there is a lot of stuff from 10 years ago you don't need or want any more. Copy to the external drive, with just CTRL C, and then paste to the new computer with CTRL V.
