I was thinking, if you put the Vista box to "sleep" or "hibernate" but powered up, and connected the two machines together with the USB to USB cable, would the Win10 machine then see the Vista's (C) hard drive as the "D" drive from some other device (like connecting your phone or GPS)? Then copy what you need to your Win10 machine, as if the Vista machine is a big external USB or other type of drive. No other parts or software required. Would likely be a faster transfer rate than a USB or other drive.
