The simple thing to do is use what you have. The external hard drive.
I'm not sure that Windows 10 will work with an Ethernet Crossover Cable, i.e., a twisted pair network cable. And really the network is the simplest way. Using the external hdd means you copy everything you want to the drive, and then recopy to the new laptop. Network them and you copy once instead. Basically half the steps and half the time.
