This is why I use FreeFileSync for backup. The first backup takes time depending upon the amount of data. Subsequent backups first check for updates and then updates them. It's done in a few minutes and is the reason I tend to make more frequent backups as a result.

I do have a 4T external hard drive, but that is, for all intents and purposes, is just a larger thumb drive in terms of transfer method. I am not some IT wizard in terms of technology and if it going to be big production or if there is a chance of screwing up the new one I will eventually take the time to archive to the external drive and then piece-meal the restoration to the new one as needed.
Unless you have more data than the external drive will hold, I think this is the best idea. When complete, the external drive will be a backup.
Yep with the 4TB external hard drive...do a full backup of the old computer to the hard drive (10yr old should be a tiny hard drive by today's standards). Then upload the external to the new computer.
Probably as fast or faster than the router and it just forced you to do a backup. Regardless, you will likely start the process and then walk away from the computer, so who cares if you start it just before bed and see the results in the morning.
Get in the habit every month or two dumping a copy to the external (more often if you save critical info).
