We use Apple TV. Most of the cable channels -- History, etc., will allow you to stream many of the current shows a day or so later just by keying in your cable or satellite subscription login. Of course, since you do not have a current subscription, you can't do this. I doubt that you have any close relatives or friends who have a subscription either.
If you are a long time customer of either your phone company, satellite, or cable, you should always whine about the charges every couple of years. Threatening to change provider -- assuming you have a choice -- will usually get you back on the introductory rate. I saved $25.00 on my internet and $20.00 on satellite (per month) just by sitting on the phone for about a half hour.
