I wanted to use my Western Digital Passport hard drives. My understanding is I can make them work, but since I'm not a technical person, I think it's going to be a pain.
Did you try the 'Files' app ?
It show the content of my Western Digital USB2 and USB3 Hard drives just fine. Both work with the USB3 slot, because the USB2 is used by my Logitech Mouse. I use the Developer Mode, maybe that makes the difference.

ChrubuntuI haven't explored much the App World of Chrome, but you can :
- stream video with Youtube, Netflix
- Free video, phone calls with Hangouts (I use the same headset of my iPad)
- Work with Doc, Docx (Google Drive)
- Work with Text file (with the Text App)
- Gmail
Then you can do more in Ubuntu mode, but I rarely have the need to.
