I've just returned from a two month quasi cross-country trip. What I used that worked without fail ( except in Oklahoma, which is hands-down a AT&T state), was an off-contract Verizon smartphone and for $5.00 per 500 mgs of ram, teathered my phone to my IPAD. The 45.00 off contract plan comes with 500 mb of data, 5.00 more gave me a gig, and 10.00 more gave me 2 cigs per month which for what I was using it for (surfing the web for my next camp stay), worked out perfectly! I didn't have to pay the $200.00 for Mifi and $20.pp a month for service. My total bill per month for two months was $60.00. The nice thing about off contract is the ability to revert back to the straight $45.00/mo At any time at all with no extra charge! Worked for me, anyways...
