We've been using Verizon mifi for 5 years or more with a pay as you go plan. Runs down, just go buy a refill card somewhere.
But, we discovered we both spent waaay too much time on the internet. So last year we rarely took the laptop with us. Instead we walked the dog more, did crossword puzzles, read books and did other things instead. Hard at first, but after a while, didn't really miss the internet that much and actually had more fun together. The internet was still there waiting for us when we got home.
