I will only slightly disagree with you ! "SOME things will work fine with modified sine wave." There is a big cost savings with a MSW, but things like microwaves and other electronics do NOT like MSW.
You need a minimum of TWO 6V golf cart batteries. If you are planning on recharging those batteries with power from the engine alternator read this DC-DC battery charging.
I would still carry a 2000W generator.
While they do cost more, I recommend an inverter-charger like the Samlex EVO 2212. Simply remove your existing converter, leaving the DC distribution panel and inverter charge directly connected to the house batteries.
