4 6 volts are only better in terms of total capacity, perhaps price, and then only at low amperage loads.
They are NOT better in terms of voltage drop. The reason is simple. There are 50% more cells in 3 12 volt jars than in 4 six volt jars. Six volt jars have thicker plates which contributes to even more voltage drop.
Since a typical hair drier is about 1500 watts, with inverter losses, it presents a load of 150 amps. On a set of 4 six volt jars (450 amp-hours) that is a load of 75 amps per cell (Peukert corrected to 107 amps). On a set of 3 twelve volt jars (375 amp-hours) that is a load of 50 amps per cell (Peukert corrected to 67 amps). The thinner plates on the twelve volt units are better suited to high loads and the load per cell is 2/3 of the six volt jars.

My first bank was 7 12 volt flooded jars. I currently use 4 12 volt AGM jars.
For "normal" house hold loads, 4 six volt batteries are an excellent choice. For a load of 150 amps--not so much.
