Apple doesn't dictate a "do it our way approach." They give you choices. It is very simple. Go to Settings then iTunes & App Store, there you will see a heading: Automatic Downloads with four controllable options to turn on or off.

Updates
Turn off Updates and any iOS update that is available will sit waiting for your manual action under Settings > General > Software Update.
It's your choice to conveniently have them automatically update or do it when you want. At least with Apple you will have a choice with a positive push notification and not have to guess if your device supports the latest.
