IP address conflict

Thread re-opened as OP solution apparently didn't solve the issue.

Well, after a simple turn-off on the phone (as suggested), things are working ok... with the Bluetooth on. Looks like turbojimmy got there first with that one. thanks

So many problems are resolved with a simple reboot.. but I sure didn't find that solution mentioned on other sites too often.

Oh, and the SSID of my hotspot is 'Virus', so I don't think too many folks will be trying to use it. Sometimes I'll change it to "McDonald's" and go in a store and see what happens. Well, not really.

So this a smartphone using hotspot app? Not a dedicated hotspot hardware device? :h

Not sure why either IPv4/IPv6 would be disabled in WIN 7? It should not be necessary to do so.

WiFi and Bluetooth use different protocols. That doesn't mean if they use the same broadcast frequency, there is no interference causing corruption of the WiFi signal.

As I understand, OP has already run ipconfig to clear cache? I would try connecting using another computer, preferably WIN 7, to see if experiencing the same messages?

If disabling Bluetooth is not fixing the issue, then I would look for updated HTC One firmware to see if it fixes DHCP issue, which may not be correctly assigning IP addresses due to some flaw or corruption?

This would not be an issue when connected to a hotspot using DHCP.

I did disable IPv6 but my schedule did not allow adequate testing before the 2 week return period and reverting to the original MiFi which again did not have the problem.

I also read that the IPv4 address space has been fully allocated which is the reason for the expanded IPv6 protocol. So long term I didn't want to be constrained to IPv4.

This is by far the best answer yet! Sure hope the OP is running Win 7 and this solves it for him.

With Win 7, the issue is most likely an update that installed IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) with IPv4 still installed and running. On some routing devices (such as the Verizon MiFi hot-spots), the router sees the two separate requests for the same IP address from the computer. This was driving me crazy on my Win 7 laptop until I turned off (un-checked) IPv6 in the properties for the wireless connection. Haven't had it pop up since.

Bluetooth shouldn't be a part of the problem as it uses a totally different set of HW and SW protocols. But turning it on and off might cause the OS to go thru different network initialization paths that might affect how the WiFi is configured or used.

Changing the number of users from 5 to 1 shouldn't affect things either. Actually having it higher than 1 is probably good and I probably wouldn't go below 3. If you have the option on the HTC, make sure the Broadcast channel for the hotspot is set to Automatic. This will force it to hunt for open channels and minimize interference with other user's hotspots.

I suspect you might be stuck with an HTC bug in the phone. I have a LG Android running 5.1.1 and I just enabled the hotspot software then connected thru it with a Mac laptop to the internet without any problems at all. I was going to try to really stress test things by having the LG phone also use its WiFi to connect to my home Unix based router and from there onto the Internet, but Android OS prohibits the use of WiFi for both hotspot and internet at the same time. (Come to think about it, I don't think I can configure that on my wireless network on my Unix system either.)

I have noticed on Android 5.1.1 on my LG that it sometimes gets confused when it should use WiFi for data and when it should use the cell connection. Turning WiFi off then turning it back on seems to get it back on track, and as I posted earlier someone reported that same trick seemed to help the IP address conflict issue.

You might also try the trick of not letting your phone go to sleep when you're using it as a hotspot. Another user on the Android developer forums reported that seemed to fix the problem of IP address conflict for him.

Failing all that, since you have a Verizon phone you might ask Verizon to loan you a different brand phone to see if that solves the problem. If it does then you can either upgrade your phone or make the case to Verizon that the HTC phone doesn't work as a hotspot.

Oh, your HTC is providing dynamic IP addresses to your computer via DHCP. On your Windows computer go to the Network Control Panel (I think that's were it is) and make sure your computer is set to make its connection using DHCP.

The reason I suspected Bluetooth is that this phone has "Bluetooth tethering". It says "Tap to share this phone's internet connection."

As for the number of users, I can select from 1 to 10 users. The phone is set at 5 - I may have done that. I've never had more than one connection in use. Will setting it back to 1 help?

Does any of your devices have a static IP. This is very common when a device is given a static IP within the DHCP range.
