I have never owned an iPhone so don't know if this works the same way with them but on my Android phones, when I move to a new phone I can still use the old phone as a mini tablet. I can't use it to make phone calls but the apps still work such as GPS, ereader, calculator, camera, video player, etc...
If you take the sim card out it will complain about it when the phone first boots but after that, it works great.
