The issue with old computers is that parts are no longer common and they're often expensive. When DDR3 showed up, DDR2 went out of vogue and prices went up, way up.
Price out RAM and disk for that beast first.
For reference, I took a 5 year old HP Netbook, with 1GB and a 1.8GHz Atom processor and loaded up Lubuntu. It was running Windows 7 Starter and was painful to use. It's now pretty much "OK" with Lubuntu.
There's no way I'd put Win 7 on an 8 year old laptop.
I'd put XP at best.
