I do run a Linux desktop at home. It started off as an experiment about, oh 6 years ago, and I've stuck with it.
But life ain't peaches and cream by any means.
There's no way I'd recommend a Linux desktop to any one who's not a nerd or has nerd-inklings.
I've collected OS's like some folks collect freckles. While there are many things about Windows I absolutely detest, I'm the first to say that my favorite, Linux, ain't ready for the average, consumer's desktop.
