Back to the OP, there's no way I'd spend money to upgrade an 2008 laptop. I'd put that money in the mason jar and let it grow until I had $150 for a new one. And I'd just live with the old laptop.

But that's just me.
This would be "tossing good money after bad" in my eyes.
