Whelp - I want to retract my thoughts about expense. Just for giggles I picked a 2008 gateway laptop at random (M-7818u) and hit Crucial.com. 4GB is $55 and it says it's SATA so you could plunk in an SSD.

1492's right - you're probably looking at $50-$100 to upgrade.

I think we all agree that if you wanted to upgrade it, the memory would have the largest effect.
