Laptop doesn't 'see' GPS

Yes, I have tried all the USB ports. Also, the cable I'm trying to use is the data cable that came with my GPS.

Yesterday, I bought a Mac. I'm picking it up next week. I've been planning on this change for a long time. We'll see what happens regarding the Garmin after downloading and installing all the Garmin stuff for the Mac.

Some USB cables are not both data and power. Since it worked on your old laptop but not the new have you tried other ports?

I'm finding with my new win 10 machine some flash drives don't work with the 3.0 USB ports but do with the 2.0 port to date I've only used the 2.0 port with the Nuvi, I've got one that is due firmware updates so I'll try the 3.0 port tomorrow.

Yes it does. I've had some Garmin cables that will charge, but not transfer data.

Yes. Everything else works in that port, shows up on the device manager, makes the little plug-in/plug-out sound, etc. It's got to be the cable.

You say the USB port is viable, but have you checked it since having problems with the GPS?

Sounds like something happened to the installed garmine usb drivers.

Newer Nuvi's, 2XXX and above use MTP, this can be changed by the user. Won't cover that here. 1XXX models may also use MTP, don't know.
My Nuvi 550 uses mass storage protocols, acts like another drive when connected. MTP devices can be seen with windows explorer.

Nothing changes when the cable is plugged in or taken out.

Go to DEVICE manager, and find the Ports (Com and LPT) if it is there, With the data cable plugged in see what is listed, take notes.

Then unplug the data cable, see if the list changes

Post the identification of the device that vanishes when you unplug ((or a couple seconds later))
