Now may be a good time to evaluate what she uses one for? Does she use Windows based programs? Does she actually need to store "stuff" on a hard drive, locally? There are a lot of good choices out there other than a traditional laptop. As Ranger said, the Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft is a good alternative to a laptop and allows the use of all Windows based applications. I personally like my IPad for most things that I need to do, but revert back to the laptop for spreadsheet work or apps that are not IPad compatible/friendly such as my tax program. I like a large screen, full sized keyboard, and the mouse for some applications. You wife may have this same desire.
