laptop sleeping question

I want to update my GPS maps. It usually takes such a long period of time I close the lid & it goes to sleep. Does this stop or just slow down the updating process? I really don't completely understand "sleeping". Even if I don't close the top it eventually goes to sleep anyway.

Suggestions on this & whist is best to do??

Depends on your LID CLOSED settings (some laptops)

If lid closed simply turns off display YES
If it puts computer to sleep NO
  • Another solution is to download and use this small program. It will keep your computer awake during long downloads by simulating a key stroke every 59 seconds. You can turn the program on or off as needed.

If so, you can set it to not sleep. At the bottom right corner of your screen, right click on the little pic of a battery. Choose 'power options', then look at the left hand column.

If you like the sleep feature, reset it after doing your update.

I usually do this about once a week so all my updates can get caught up. Then switch back to more power-saving settings if you need to conserve battery.
  • after you click the power options
    left hand collumm
pick choose what happens when i close lid, then click the choice "nothing"
    also
    then click change display options
you will be presented with timer choices .. for battery operation and plugged in operation
when done click save then exit/close window

on mine for plugged in i set turn off display at 30 minutes
and shut down PC at never

so when i go off to bed or walk away from it, it still keeps doing whatever task i left running, either downloading some file or processing some video

It certainly won't update it when asleep, or off-line. I'd push: INSTALL/UPDATE, then walk away from it, but I wouldn't put it to sleep/re-start, or, OFF.
