Latest Win 10 update VERY VERY SLOW!!

Would you believe over six hours to install the latest Win 10 package.
I did not jump the gun but waited for the invite like they tell you to do.

I have a very fast cable connection and my PC is hard wired into the router, no wifi.
It starts off nice "You may continue working while it downloads and install"
That took a long time.
It reboots and lets you log in, thinking it's done but nooooo.
Now it begins the long tedious process of re-booting, warning you to step away and let it work.
I kid you not, over six hours and this morning it was a ten minute boot before loging in.

So do your business before doing an install and walk away but not to far because you do have to log in again to finish it off.

P.S.
I logged in and wrote this note 15 minutes ago.
My hard drive is still grinding away in the background, it ain't over yet.

  • Took about 20-30 minutes on my machines. The eldest laptop was 30 maybe a bit more. I think there's so much variety in computer configurations, that it's difficult to say how long an upgrade should take. A mechanical hard drive could really slow things down, depending on the age and model of the drive, and how full it is.

All of mine have at least 4gb ram, two main computers have 32gb and all run solid state drives (ssd). I gave up on mechanical drives years ago.
  • It's the Windows Creator Addition. Mine went in yesterday morning.
It took about 20 minutes from start to finish with a couple of reboots.

To the OP, 6 hours...interesting and wow.
  • One of my machines got the update this morning. Took about 20 minutes to install.

That sounds like the Annerversery Edition update.. basically they replaced EVERYTHING.. Mine went much smoother.

I've done 3 windows 10 machines, one will NOT update to AE. One I did not do the update (Someone else did) This one ... Well it went well.

On the one someone else owns we got it set up initally, then she forgot her password and we had to do it all over.. During the restore to factory condition part it was so fast.... I took her to dinner.

What can I say.. I also have a chrome book... Longest update "Down time" was under 2 minutes.
  • Please note:

This is not a gripe against Microsoft, just a caution when you're ready to do the upgrade.
It takes time, lots of it.
Even if you let it go overnight, eventually you have to log in and start phase two so you will not get away from the wait time.
  • And if you go on Microsoft web site to get help with a problem, good luck with that.
