looking for video solution other than cable/sat

Hi there everyone,

So, we got our Cable bill, and I almost hit the roof. For the last several months, DW has been paying the $100.00 Cable bill when we only watch 6 or 8 channels. What a rip off. We get a great signal over the air for the local channels. We figure we can watch most of the cable only channels (animal planet) from our internet connection to get caught up on Pit bulls and Parolees.

Our one stumbling block is wanting to be able to record some of the local programs when we are away with friends for dinner or situations like that. We're wondering if something like TIVO is an option or any other suggestions are welcome. If we go with TIVO, were wondering can you buy the equipment or is it a rental? Is there a monthly fee?

Please avoid long rants about cable providers. Being that I use to work for one, I know the biggest charges to the cable providers are from the content providers such as local Broadcasters, ESPN and the like. The Cable company I used to work for was a money losing operation. It relied on cash from the Telco (land line) operation to keep the financial boat afloat.

Thanks for your responses in advance!

Happy camping! Eric and Carol

  • I installed TiVo in my motor home a year ago. I bought it for $100. There is a $15/ month fee. It needs an internet connection or a telephone connection for the guide and other features.

I have a wifi repeater and router in my MH so it is hooked to it.

You may call me if you wish.
  • I'm sorry everyone, we live full time in our rv, but we home port in Sacramento. We take the rig out about once a month for some form of adventure.

    Thanks! Eric
  • When we lived in town (North of Indianapolis), we had cable. We moved to the country where there was absolutely NO cable for anything ... not even phone, as this pocked area we live now is deadlocked. So, that left us with no choice but to consider satellite services. So we went with Direct TV and we were pretty happy, but after the initial (free) and special pricing (1 year), the prices started jumping up, and we started canceling stations, until we were near $100 for the very basic of basic stations.

Along came this guy knocking at our door who represented a 3rd company. I call it a 3rd company because he had both the DISH and the Direct TV logo on his shirt.

He pointed out the way to keep costs down is to switch Satellite providers ever 2 years, back and forth between Dish and Direct TV. That way, you are always a "new customer" and get the "new customer" discounts.

Our bill went from $100 a month with Direct TV to $54 a month with Dish for 2 years. Guess what we're doing again in July 2015?

Besides that, the installers sold us a tripod and another satellite dish, and using one of the 3 receivers in the house, we can take our "system" on the road with us. And we've been enjoying the lower cost and the ability to have satellite TV when we go camping too!

    Consider satellite TV.
