looking for video solution other than cable/sat

Hi there everyone,

So, we got our Cable bill, and I almost hit the roof. For the last several months, DW has been paying the $100.00 Cable bill when we only watch 6 or 8 channels. What a rip off. We get a great signal over the air for the local channels. We figure we can watch most of the cable only channels (animal planet) from our internet connection to get caught up on Pit bulls and Parolees.

Our one stumbling block is wanting to be able to record some of the local programs when we are away with friends for dinner or situations like that. We're wondering if something like TIVO is an option or any other suggestions are welcome. If we go with TIVO, were wondering can you buy the equipment or is it a rental? Is there a monthly fee?

Please avoid long rants about cable providers. Being that I use to work for one, I know the biggest charges to the cable providers are from the content providers such as local Broadcasters, ESPN and the like. The Cable company I used to work for was a money losing operation. It relied on cash from the Telco (land line) operation to keep the financial boat afloat.

Thanks for your responses in advance!

Happy camping! Eric and Carol
