I was jealous of a motorcyle-riding friend's apple maps program, that has this as an option. Google maps is obsessed with freeways and hates to admit that minor roads even exist :).
Anybody here know of an android or PC program that will help me plan routes without freeways?
You just need to learn how to use Google maps.
With Google maps, all you have to do it select your destination and then go to "Route Options" and select "Avoid highways" and you will be routed on regular roads and not highways/freeways. You also can select "Avoid Tolls" and "Avoid Ferries". Also, for the record, "apple maps" pales in comparison to Google maps!

This is very unhelpful because Google maps does not actually exclude highways even when you select this option it still puts you on expressways, etc.

it does unless there is no other way to get to where you are going. an express way is not a highway either. nor is a freeway, they are classified by google and others as controlled access highways which puts them in a different class.
up here a free way or expressway is a municipal road through a city, usually, a highway is a provincial road. but you will find the names are used all over different.

Not sure if you noticed but you are responding to a 10 year old post. Sherlock hasn't been on here in about 7 years. Helpful tip; aside from the date of the post, you can click on a user name to see when their last activity was.

In theory, the data is there but the date on old threads isn't exactly highlighted and having to check the user's history isn't convienent. It would have been nice, if when they trashed the old site, if they would have updated it to highlight if a thread is old. This issue comes up at least a couple times a month, so it's obviously a system not a user issue.
