When Geocaching's mapping/routing is down, I use yournavigation.org to create & download routes. I've used them with Geocaching's routes, but haven't tried loading them into the DeLorme handheld or the Garmin Nuvi.
Fill in your from/to using the mouse wheel to zoom in/out, etc.
Click on Export tab, select gpx. Export
Upload to your device.
