That may be the case, but the OP mentioned a Windows update which is where the issue first appeared?
Come to think of it, some hardware drivers are also included with Windows Update, usually video drivers, and keyboard/mice drivers. However it could have been a driver for his LAN card which broke the software? I never let Windows handle my hardware driver update just to be on the safe side. I don't remember any problems caused by Windows Update with Windows 7 on any machine I'm responsible for. Just lucky I guess?
