OP here, wow some detour signs went up on this road. He quickly discovered what was blocking connections and disabled it so that future updates wouldn't repeat the process. I loaded the updates 7/13, and I wasn't in any hurry as we have other 'puters to use. None of which are Win7. We were extremely busy with customers when he stopped by, and for $20 he didn't hang around to chit chat. It was beyond my abilities, and the purpose of the post was both a tongue in cheek poke at MS and a warning to others.
