More Campground WIFI questions

I'm trying to get access to generic campground WIFI services without having to go sit on a bench outside the campground office. I also want to use a wireless distribution system.

I'm still deciding on a couple of off-the-shelf WIFI devices; or configuring a hard wired laptop; or reflashing an old router with DD-WRT to distribute the signal but getting the signal in the first place is still vague. There are a lot of choices; External or internal antenna; directional or omni; boosted or not.

What I think I want is a boosted, directional antenna piggy-backed on the TV mast connected to a stand-alone wireless router so that I don't have to bring the laptop along if I don't want it.

Having said all that...What do most people really do.

  • So for, except for a brand new campground that was basically empty, I have no luck with campground wifi. I will try it, but if I can't get a good connection, I just use cellular and watch my usage.
  • I have a smart repeater connected to a Hawkins booster and a fiberglass dipole on the roof. You will be amazed on how many wifi spots there are after you turn it on. However it's only as good as the cg system and how many other people are between you and the cg antenna drawing down the bandwidth.
  • Pay for your own cell Wi-Fi if you really need it. Boosting a signal from the campground office won't help much if everyone in the CG is trying to stream movies.
  • Even if you can spend money and time boosting or rebroadcasting the signal, it's likely it will not work any better than if you sat outside the office.

If I can't use it with my laptop, I use my Verizon hotspot.
  • Verizon Hotspot. Our long experience shows that "most" wifi is useless.
  • Get a simple wireless repeater, with a built in router, from any major electronics store. Down here, Walmart has them.
