Mouse quits?
Each time I shut down the laptop, and start it -- the wireless mouse quits working. I remove the mouse "whatchamacallit" from the USB port, plug it back in, and mouse works again. Any hints why ...

Not all that odd, really. It sounds like your mouse is de-syncronizing from its usb. Putting it in a different port will make it re-syncronize. They wear out...it happens.
Have you seen if the issue replicates with different mouse?
Get a new mouse. Name it Lola.
