Neat Scanner Question

Hi, has anyone purchased and used the Neat scanner? If so, how do you like it and can you export their database to an excel spreadsheet?

Thanks,

  • We've been thrilled with the Neat system in the 3 years we've had it. For RV'ers, it means that you don't have to keep papers.

The scanners are pretty good, but the "secret sauce" is really in the Neat database program (and now with Neat Cloud). The database keeps track of tax information, payee reports, etc. by using a fairly sophisticated OCR subprogram to populate the database fields. But, like all OCR programs, it doesn't always get everything perfect; that's why you need to review and edit. Our editing is perhaps 8-10% of the text scanned.

So, between our Quicken for financial books, Quicken Medical Expense Manager for our healthcare charges (fairly significant), and Neat for the paperwork backup to both of those, we can post it, scan it, shred it and forget it from then on! Major Kudos to the gang from Neat!

On the desk model you can put a bunch of receipts either the small tape size or 8x11's in the feeder and it will take them in order and scan them one by one.

Sure you may have to make some corrections to where you want to have the receipt stored depending on what categories you have st up.

Again we have the desk model but take it along when we are out for months at a time....or longer as we plan ahead for future extended trips.

So you are happy with the scanner overall?

  • I use the portable version that does not need a power plug. On the down side, you feed one receipt at a time. I've always wondered if the desk version works like on the commercial.... you put a stack in the tray and it feeds them automatically. I'm skeptical. Maybe someone with the desk model can let us know.

Secondly, the resulting reading of the receipt is not perfect. It comes up on the screen and you have to input the fields that are missing or incorrect... on MOST receipts. It works... but it's not as effortless as the commercial implies.
  • We've used the Neat Desk at our home base for a few years...great product and certainly has reduced our paper file system.

Yes you can export to excel as well as a PDF, Quicken. QuickBooks and MSN Money.
