Need help Windows Vista

I have two computers that are both using Windows Vista Home Premium.. On both computers since I am the only user, I am set up as the "Administrator" in User Accounts. It appears that both computers are set up identical BUT on one, everytime I want to add or delete a program I have to turn the User Account Control on or off" to complete the action but on the other I can do what ever I want without involving the User Account Control.. This has me totally stumped and I am sure there is an easy fix but what? Can anyone offer a suggestion?? Thanks

  • If I'm understanding this issue correctly, it's not the UAC notification? It's that UAC will not allow installation of any programs, even with UAC approval?

For some reason, this doesn't sound like an administrator account? Even if it says administrator.
  • What happens when you right-click on an install file, and select run as administrator? Does it prompt for a password and installs without having to disable UAC? Also, what level is set under UAC settings for your administrator account?

Another option is to create a new administrator account as a test, then see if you can install programs without disabling UAC.

  • If your going to run windows, it is best to not run in administrator mode. This will provide you with some additional protection. JMO
  • Do both computers have the same name and are they connected via network? Maybe the first one you set up is the "administrator" and the second one is subordinate to the first. I don't know for sure as I never had Vista but maybe this is of some help.
  • Maybe I was confusing in my initial question.. I know how to turn the User Account Control on / off BUT, only one Vista computer requires me to do it when adding or deleting programs / functions and the other does not even though they appear to have the same User Account Settings in the Control Panel. It is not a huge deal, but since I am the Administrator, shouldn't I be permitted to do what I want without having to change the User Account Control on/off and restarting the computer each time I make a change.. Thanks to all for your time and inputs..
  • Are you saying you disable them and when you go to delete a program it still asks?
  • From Microsoft...hope this helps.

Turn User Account Control on or off

User Account Control (UAC) can help you prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. It works by prompting you for permission when a task requires administrative rights, such as installing software or changing settings that affect other users.

We don't recommend turning User Account Control off. If you do turn it off, you should turn it back on as soon as possible.

Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety (or clicking User Accounts, if you are connected to a network domain), and then clicking User Accounts.

Click Turn User Account Control on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK.
