Most only have coverage in the immediate area of office or rec center. The band width is very narrow DSL signal.
I believe this to be fairly accurate, though I have been in many CG which have repeaters in the CG. What many miss is that it is quite often not the access point or repeater that is the weak link. Most could probably handle twice the load. Some CG do buy cheap routers, though.
The real problem lies in 2 different areas.
1. Laptop built in aircards are weak at best. WiFi requires 2 way communications. If the sender and receiver cannot shake hands, it appears to the user that nothing is happening. That is why an external antenna/AP at the coach will boost the outgoing signal, enabling the laptop signal to reach the repeater/AP. This establishes communications but does nothing for the second problem.
2. The source of the signal is very limited. Often referred to as narrow or small bandwidth. As the quate above, the signal could be originating from a DSL line in the office or a sat connection (not often, though) or other "slow" media. The CG may have only purchased a few (50) Mbps download and even less upload speed. This type of throttle over a shared network will result in great latency and be of little use in streaming.
