I use a switch (A vintage D-Link) and yes.. all it does is switch. the router controls all the things the router controls IT assigns IP addresses. It blocks or forwards.. It's kind of like adding half a dozen ports to the Router (You need one router port for the switch and one switch port for the router so you only gain six)
But the router still does it all. the only difference is that the total bandwidth to the devices on the switch is limited by the max bandwidth of the router's LAN port So if it's a Gigibit. and two devices are sucking data, they may only get half a gig each.
