We'll often use the HDMI hooked to the laptop to watch movies and it does great for that. Just need to select the input and the correct HDMI port on the TV.
I wouldn't suggest a desktop unless you have a specific need that calls for it. For most uses a laptop is more versatile and can be hooked up to TV's or monitors (presuming you checked for the appropriate cable availability.
