OP, I'd say the geek is overstating your exposure although it does exist. If you have current anti-virus software, don't do dumb things like clicking links in unsolicited emails, and you're ok with current performance keep with your plan to replace with something in your timeframe. At that time I'd seriously reevaluate what your use for a computer is and then check your options. A lot of better than Windows based devices out there. We ditched our failing laptops for Surface devices but find we spend most of our time on our iphones or iPads as they do most of what we need done without the baggage and constant updates. If I didn't use Excel or tax software I'd have no need for a pc.
